The Guanabara Palace in Rio de Janeiro was originally of neoclassical design, its construction started by the Portuguese José Machado Coelho in 1853, initially serving as a private residence until the 1860s. In 1865, it became the residence of Princess Isabel and her husband, the Count d’Eu, hence known as the Paço Isabel.
On November 10, 1937, Getúlio Vargas declared, in a nationwide radio address, that Brazil was under a new regime of government, the Estado Novo (New State). Characterized by the centralization of power, nationalism, anti-communism, and authoritarianism, the Estado Novo lasted until 1945 when Getúlio was overthrown by the Armed Forces.
The National Monument to the Immigrant, inaugurated by President Getúlio Vargas in 1954 in Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul. Its cornerstone was laid in 1950 by President Eurico Gaspar Dutra. The construction was initiated by a community commission, which held a competition to determine the best project dedicated to honoring the Italian immigrants of the state.
The oldest institution of its kind in Brazil, alongside the Law School of Recife, owes its origins to an imperial decree signed in 1827. The original building, in a Baroque style, was inaugurated on September 17, 1647.
