On November 15, 1889, Manuel Deodoro da Fonseca, a military figure and politician, declared the Republic of Brazil through a coup d’état. As the first president in the country’s history, his tenure was marked by considerable political and economic instability.

Today in Brazil: Deodoro da Fonseca proclaims the Republic in Brazil

The crisis reached its peak with the closure of the National Congress, leading to his resignation on November 23, 1891. He was succeeded by Floriano Peixoto. The establishment of the Republic happened almost without any conflict throughout the country, except for the state of Maranhão, where former slaves supported the Empire. Argentina was the first nation to recognize the new government on November 20, 1889. Deodoro da Fonseca died on August 23, 1892, in Rio de Janeiro, due to a severe respiratory crisis.
